Shunga (春画, literally translating as "pictures of spring", "spring" meaning "sex" in this context) is a type of Japanese erotic art, depicting all the usual characters of the ukiyo-e art genre - courtesans, samurai, (octopuses...) - and the ordinary folk too, engaging in all sorts of erotic shenanigans with each other.
These prints were popular throughout the ages, used as lucky charms, instructive images and, most likely, just for personal enjoyment! :)
The exaggerated sizes of the genitalia have to do with the fact that they represent the private sexual life of the characters, their "second face", as opposed to the public life in the society, represented by their actual face, so both "faces" are given equal weight and size in the composition. Which can lead to quite unusual poses and quite impossible, ahem, angles!
Leaving the sensual power of these images aside, the skill and artistry of the masters behind them is striking. The ama diver's black hair, flowing down in a sensuous stream; the opulent garments of entangled lovers, enveloping them in further embraces; white socks on tiny feet of geisha fluttering in the air; the many beautiful faces, contorted in fervours of passion... Gorgeous.
Satin finish for a vivid colour reproduction on the front, reverse can be written on with all types of instruments.
